ZERO DATA LOSS DISASTER RECOVERY FOR ORACLE SE

Sub-second data loss protection for Oracle SE

The Zero Data Loss (ZDL) option sets a new benchmark, redefining best-practice disaster recovery on Oracle SE.

Traditional methods ship archive logs every 5–15 minutes, which means a failure at the wrong moment could cost you that entire window. StandbyMP ZDL closes the gap.

The result is a standby that remains much closer to the primary, reducing data loss exposure from minutes to sub-second levels, and delivering Enterprise-grade protection at Standard Edition cost.

The protection you need, without the Enterprise Edition upgrade.

Achieving an extremely low Recovery Point Objective (RPO) on Oracle has traditionally meant accepting a compromise: higher licensing costs, greater complexity or infrastructure changes.

ZDL changes the game.

The ZDL option brings sub-second protection to Oracle Standard Edition (Oracle SE), allowing you to retain the licensing economics while dramatically reducing your potential data loss.

HOW IT WORKS

The ZDL Architecture

ZDL is an additional real-time replication layer that augments, rather than replaces, StandbyMP's existing Archive Log Shipping technology.

ZDL monitors the primary database’s online redo logs and streams redo to the standby as it is generated, rather than waiting for the next archive log interval. The replicated redo can then be incorporated during standby activation to close the final log gap. This reduces the potential data loss (RPO) from minutes to sub-second.

The two complementary replication paths work together:

  • Continuous redo streaming: Streams changes from the online redo logs as they are generated.
  • Archive log shipping: Continues transferring and applying completed archive logs.
  • ZDL extends, rather than replaces, StandbyMP’s proven replication architecture.

Who is Zero Data Loss for?

ZDL is no longer just for your most critical databases.

Historically, achieving near-zero data loss meant higher cost, complexity and technical overhead, making it difficult to justify for anything but the highest-value workloads.

ZDL resets that equation. It brings sub-second RPO to Oracle SE in a solution that's simple to deploy, easy to manage and affordable.

So instead of asking “Which databases justify ZDL?”, the question becomes “Why wouldn’t we protect our databases with sub-second RPO?”

Almost any business where losing recent transactions creates cost, disruption or reconciliation work can benefit. Here are three industry examples where ZDL can make an immediate difference.

Healthcare

Protect the transactions that matter

A healthcare provider runs clinical applications on Oracle SE. Losing even a few minutes of transactions could mean recently entered patient information, appointments or clinical updates need to be identified and reconciled.

  • ZDL reduces that exposure to sub-second levels, helping protect critical data without requiring Enterprise Edition.

Financial Services

When every transaction counts

A financial services organisation processes a continuous stream of customer transactions. After an outage, missing transactions can create significant reconciliation work and delay confidence in the recovered database.

  • ZDL keeps the standby within a fraction of a second of the primary, dramatically reducing the potential transaction gap.

Manufacturing

Keep operations moving

A manufacturer relies on Oracle SE for systems supporting orders, inventory and production. Losing several minutes of database activity can create discrepancies that teams need to resolve before operations return to normal.

  • ZDL provides sub-second RPO, reducing potential data loss and the operational impact of recovery.

Frequently asked questions

How does licensing work?

Pricing is per database with a minimum configuration of one primary database, one secondary database and one year of support.

Perpetual licenses and Term licenses are available:

Perpetual licenses -  Purchaser owns and retains the license permanently. Support is an additional cost and support renewal is required each year.

Term licenses -  Purchased for a predefined period (1, 2 or 3 years) and can be extended at any time during the term. Support is included in the price. The flexibility of Term licenses makes them beneficial for computing environments that may change over the next few years or for limited life projects.

Zero Data Loss Version. - ZDL is purchased as an additional option to the StandbyMP license and is available as a Term or Perpetual license. Like StandbyMP, a standard solution consists of two licenses, a primary database license and a standby database license

What is StandbyMP Zero Data Loss (ZDL)?
StandbyMP Zero Data Loss is an optional feature for Oracle Standard Edition that adds continuous redo streaming alongside StandbyMP’s existing archive log replication. It dramatically reduces potential data loss, delivering sub-second RPO in qualified environments.
How does Zero Data Loss work?
ZDL continuously monitors the primary database’s online redo logs and streams redo to the standby as it is generated. This means StandbyMP no longer needs to wait for the current archive log to complete before those changes can be transferred to the standby.
Does ZDL replace archive log shipping?
No. ZDL extends rather than replaces StandbyMP’s proven archive log replication. The two complementary replication layers operate together. This combines the tighter recovery point of ZDL with the resilience of StandbyMP’s established archive log shipping.
What RPO can I achieve with ZDL?
ZDL is designed to deliver a sub-second RPO in qualified environments, keeping the standby within a fraction of a second of the primary. Actual exposure can vary depending on factors such as workload, disk and network performance.
Is ZDL really Zero Data Loss?
During an unexpected failure, ZDL is designed to deliver sub-second RPO in qualified environments. As with asynchronous replication technologies, there can be a very small amount of changes in memory or redo in transit when an unexpected failure occurs.

Planned Graceful Switchover functionality allows switchovers without data loss.
Does ZDL provide zero downtime?
No. ZDL addresses the databases RPO (Recovery Point Objective) rather than RTO (Recovery Time Objective). It dramatically reduces the amount of data potentially lost, but the standby still needs to be activated and applications restored or redirected following a failure.

Zero Data Loss may reduce your time to Trusted Business of the total system as less time may be required for data retrieval and reconciliation.
Do I need Oracle Enterprise Edition or Data Guard?
No. ZDL is designed specifically to bring sub-second RPO to Oracle Standard Edition environments. This allows organisations to achieve a much tighter recovery point while retaining the licensing and cost advantages of Standard Edition, without requiring Oracle Enterprise Edition or Data Guard.
Is ZDL difficult to deploy and manage?
No. ZDL has been designed to extend an existing StandbyMP environment without introducing unnecessary complexity. It can be configured, monitored and managed through the StandbyMP Control Center or CLI, alongside your existing disaster recovery environment.
Can I add ZDL to an existing StandbyMP environment?
Yes. ZDL can be added to existing StandbyMP Oracle Standard Edition environments as well as new deployments. This allows existing customers to improve their RPO without replacing their established StandbyMP disaster recovery architecture.

Where can StandbyMP ZDL be deployed?

ZDL supports Oracle Standard Edition environments across on-premises, cloud and hybrid architectures. It has also been tested with a wide-range of Oracle technologies including ODA, OCI Base Database Service, OCI Compute, OMF, ASM, and SE2HA.

Please see the documentation for further information.

How is 'suitable environment' defined?
Within its supported configurations, ZDL has been tested across a range of Oracle environments and is designed to be flexible and resilient. However, as with any continuous replication technology, its performance depends on the workload and infrastructure in which it operates.

A suitable environment is a supported Oracle Database configuration that meets the documented ZDL requirements and has sufficient performance headroom for redo replication alongside normal archive-log synchronisation.

Key considerations include overall database and CPU load, network bandwidth, latency and stability, and the performance of the storage hosting the primary redo logs. The network should accommodate both ZDL and archive-log traffic at peak redo-generation rates, with a response time of approximately 50 ms or less. Primary redo logs must be located on high-performance SSD or NVMe storage.

These factors should be validated under representative peak workloads, including periods affected by batch processing, backups or other heavy network and storage activity.
We recommend completing a proof of concept (POC) before enabling ZDL or making associated changes in a production environment.
